What Is My Skin Type? How to Test for Dry, Oily, or Combo Skin
The best skincare routine won’t work unless you use the right products designed specifically for your unique skin type. Our skin is our biggest organ and one of our best assets. It’s the first thing people see when you walk into a room, and it needs proper care.
Having that “perfect skin” feeling makes us feel confident and beautiful, so it's important to get the best results from products designed specifically for your unique skin type. Here’s a quick guide to quickly figure out your skin type and what products will work for you.
What Are The Different Skin Types?
There's no need to overcomplicate skincare, whether it's your routine or your skin type. The truth is, you don’t need elaborate quizzes and questionnaires to find products made for you.
Skin types are broken down into the following categories:
- Dry and Normal
- Oily, Sensitive, and Combination
- Aging Skin
Skin types can change from time to time based on environmental shifts, hormonal changes, and other factors. While diet and lifestyle can’t fundamentally change the genetic makeup of our skin, they can significantly impact day-to-day skin behavior, including hydration, breakouts, and inflammation.
Let's dive into each skin type individually and explore the products that work best for you!
How To Determine Your Skin Type
There are several ways to find out your skin type and where you fit in the list above. At Lucin Organics, we have always created products to serve each skin type.
We made sure that women could find the products that work best for their unique skin instead of making “one-size-fits-all” products.
Dry and Normal
Normal skin is well-balanced and naturally hydrated. It looks and feels plump without flaking, redness, or irritation.
Normal skin types also have excellent sebum regulation without excess oil production but still enough to keep the face well moisturized and glowing.
Dry skin types, on the other hand, feel flaky and often tight, almost like they have no ability to stretch. Dry skin produces much less oil, which can lead to breakouts and flaky skin.
To figure out if you have dry skin, you can try the “napkin and mirror” test.
First, using a thin face napkin immediately after waking up, tap your face and check for oil. If there is no oily residue on the napkin, then you likely have either dry or normal skin.
Then, using both hands, gently stretch apart one of your cheeks in front of the mirror. If you see and feel lines forming or a stretching that feels flaky and tight, then you have dry skin.
You can repeat this test across your face, including your chin and T-zone, to test for dry or combination skin.
Without proper hydration, the skin ages more quickly, leading to premature wrinkles and fine lines. People also experience flakiness around the cheeks, nose, and forehead.

Oily, Sensitive, and Combination
Characterized by excess oil production, oily skin is often easier to spot. While natural facial oils help the skin stay youthful and plump, too much sebum production can lead to breakouts, acne, and a heavy or waxy feeling.
Most people actually have oily skin, especially at a younger age. Unfortunately, there is a myth that people with oily skin don’t need to moisturize and should avoid most skincare products.
This just isn’t true! Instead, you need the right skincare products designed specifically for oily skin.
To test for oily skin, you can do the napkin test. Using a thin facial napkin, tap your cheeks, forehead, and chin. If you notice oily spots or residue on the napkin or cotton pad, then you have oily or combination skin.
Combination skin is a common skin type that presents mostly with dry cheeks and an oily chin and T-zone. It features more than one skin type across the face.
Trying the napkin test multiple times in different spots across the face will help reveal if you have combination skin.
Sensitive skin usually presents around the forehead and cheeks.
Most people with sensitive skin feel irritation and experience redness from changes in weather and different skincare and cosmetic products.
You should always spot test any new skincare or beauty product you use, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Aging-Skin
Aging skin is beautiful! At Lucin Organics, we don’t believe in preventing aging because aging gracefully is a natural part of life.
It’s important to support your skin as it naturally begins to lose collagen and elastin. Premature and rapid skin aging can lead to more fine lines and wrinkles than naturally intended.
Our skin first begins to lose collagen starting around the age of 25.
In your mid-20s and early 30s, we actually suggest combining anti-aging skincare products with your regular skin type products. So if you have dry skin, you can use your Lucin Organics dry and normal products with our anti-aging products for best results!
After 35 or 40, you can completely switch to just using anti-aging products to support your skin's natural aging.
For Aging Skin, you can shop our Anti-Aging Skincare Set.
